The Armenian alphabet is one of the oldest writing systems still used today. It was created in 405 AD by the scholar Mesrop Mashtots to help spread literacy and support religious education in Armenia.
The original alphabet had 36 letters, each matching a specific sound in the Armenian language. Later, three more letters were added, making a total of 39 letters in the modern Armenian alphabet. It is written from left to right and is easily recognized by its unique and distinctive letter shapes.
More than just a writing system, the Armenian alphabet has played a key role in preserving Armenian culture, history, and identity. It allowed important texts to be written and passed down through generations and continues to be used today by Armenians around the world.
